Nutritional Psychiatry
Food has a direct impact on the way you feel, think and behave every day.
Food is powerful. Food can evoke emotions and memories. Food can be addictive. We might treat ourselves to our favorite indulgences when times are good and when times are bad.
We worry about how food might affect our waistline. However, most people neglect to think about is how the hundred of thousands of biochemicals we put into our mouth every day impact the way we feel, think and behave. We all know what a little dose of biochemical can do in pill form, but fail to think about the impact of the biochemicals we put into and on our bodies every day.
The old saying “you are what you eat” has a new meaning as science untangles more about how food effects our brains and our bodies. We live in a time when so many people struggle with obesity and yet also have vitamin deficiencies. The ‘hidden hunger’ is the concept of an overstimulated appetite due to nutrient deficiencies. We eat food that is ultra processed, nutrient devoid and designed to keep us hooked.
One focus at Well Life Psychiatry is to use food as medicine. To heal our bodies and minds by examining the food we are eating, the microbiome, the gut-brain axis and nutrient deficiencies. By optimizing nutrition and the gut we can limit unhealthy food cravings and heal the brain and body.
